There are wonderful people in this country doing wonderful things.  This post is not about them.

Maybe I should write about those people more since the media doesn’t seem to know that they even exist, but it’s so damn hard when you have things like the following going on.  Besides, blogging is a kind of therapy for me ~ after living in California for over 25 years, my tolerance margins has been narrowed considerably and my cynicism on the human race has been expanded ten-fold.  (It was pretty wide to begin with…there’s a reason I don’t come down off my ridge much.  And muckraking has always been second nature to me.  Hypocrisy and lies don’t sit well with me.)

Senate Approves National PTSD Awareness Day PoliticalNews.me - May 30,2012

Washington – The United States Senate has unanimously approved legislation authored by Senator Kent Conrad designating June 27, 2012 as National PTSD Awareness Day.

The event is part of Senator Conrad’s continuing efforts tobring greater awareness to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a severe anxiety disorder often associated with having experienced the trauma of combat.

It’s an election year, so the trumpets are going to be sounding loud and long about all the Suits are doing for our Vets.  Unfortunately, it’s going to be a lot of talk and toothless resolutions, as usual.

But then, it’s easy to sound grandiose while sitting in a temperature-controlled office surrounded by security and people paid to do your bidding.

I love Rolling Thunder and miss being a part of it since the local chapter kind of fell apart. It’s a wonderful and important event that should be experienced by everyone at least once.  The Candlelight Vigil at The Wall is one experience I’ll never forget ~ standing silently as the Gold Star Mothers walk past us and the candle flames reflect back from The Wall and float into the dark.

Meeting some of the nicest people ever and watching (through teary eyes) the hugs between men and women who may not know each other but definitely hold a special bond.

This year was the 25th Ride To The Wall and looked to be one of the best.

Brief Obama meet for Rolling Thunder delegation this year

Rolling Thunder made it to the White House this year. But the experience for the motorcycle-riding patriots was more clinical photo op than heartfelt meeting with President Obama, members of the group said Friday.

“Well, we had a good meeting with [Mr. Obama's] staff and a defense official. But we were supposed to have time with the president,” founder and Executive National Director Artie Muller told The Washington Times in an interview after the meeting.

“When we were there in the past, the president himself talked to us about the issues that concern us — veterans’ health care, the fate of prisoners of war, and those missing in action. This was more or less a handshake and a photo op for the White House — and that’s all it was,” Mr. Muller said.

Despite myriad challenges, Chambers hasn’t missed a Rolling Thunder since, becoming somewhat of a legend who is recognized by millions.

If it were just ignorance, it would be one thing.  But this guy is supposed to be intelligent and informed.  (I bet his fingernails are manicured and his palms have no calluses.)  I mean you can go through life sheltered from the harsher realities of life ~ such as being trapped in a burning building or losing a child.  (I bet he has a special mirror that he looks at himself in.) Still, you can talk with people who have experienced the harsher things in life ~ like WAR.  (I doubt he has ever held an air pistol, much less a weapon.)  You can also read about what men and women have gone through while in WAR.  Lots of books out there, the Military Channel, the History Channel and now terrific websites where you can actually watch videos of the actual person talking about what they went through or listen to a battle buddy talking about his fallen comrades in arms.  (He seems to know really big words, so we know he can read.)

Steve Burke [sic, actually Beck], who was a casualty officer with the Marines and had to tell people [inaudible].  Um, I, I, ah, back sorry, um, I think it’s interesting because I think it is very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words “heroes.” Um, and, ah, ah, why do I feel so comfortable [sic] about the word “hero”?  I feel comfortable, ah, uncomfortable, about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war. Um, and, I don’t want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that’s fallen, and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism: hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers and things like that. But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I’m wrong about that.

Yes, Chris Hayes, you are so very wrong about that.

But buck up, realizing and identifying your problem is half the battle.

Being the daughter of a Funeral Directer and WWII Vets (Mom and Dad both), this has bothered me since I learned that there are so many unclaimed remains of veterans sitting in storage at funeral homes across the country.

I was thrilled when I discovered that there are people working very hard to find them.

Veterans forgotten no more

Since 2006, a group of volunteers called the Missing in America Project has been looking for people such as Andrews. Funeral homes all over the country have unclaimed cremated remains in storage; in some cases, laws have prevented the remains from being disposed of, or the funeral homes have decided to hold on to the remains out of respect for the dead.

Some of those remains are decades old. Some are the remains of veterans.

The project’s volunteers contact the funeral homes searching for veterans. They deserve proper burials, say the volunteers and those who have worked to help the project.

“These are people who have served their country … and they’re sitting on a shelf somewhere,” said Thomas Moe, director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, who has testified in Congress for a law making it easier to identify and bury the remains.

At the cemetery, an honor guard fired a rifle volley, a bugler played taps, flags were presented. And when it was all over, the woman who found these forgotten veterans last year sighed.

“They’re finally home,” Chastity Booth said.

Missing in America Project

Scope:

The initial focus of the MIA Project will be a massive, nation-wide effort to locate, identify and inter the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans. This task will be executed through the combined, cooperative efforts of members of the American Legion, other volunteer service and veteran organizations, local Funeral Homes, State Funeral Commissions, State and National Veterans Administration Agencies, and the State and National Veterans Cemetery Administrations. Local, state and national laws must be followed in the identification, claiming process and proper interment of the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans.

This will be a lengthy project and will require many man-hours to ensure that we have done our utmost to discover every forgotten veteran and procure each a dignified resting place. This will also be a labor of love, a task of redemption, for a debt of service that can never be repaid.

The second phase of the MIA Project will be the creation of a network of individuals working with local Funeral Homes, State, and National Agencies to ensure that, from now on, the cremated remains of any unclaimed veteran will be identified, claimed and interred in a timely manner. This will be an ongoing project and will most likely be a cooperative effort between many voluntary service organizations.

The MIA Project will be a long-term project, but not a time sensitive project.

Total Funeral Homes Visited  - 2242   Cremains Found - 13800*

Veterans Cremains Identified - 1898    Veterans Interred - 1631

* 3500  of these Cremains were found in one institution

*2600 more names recently received from two funeral homes in Missouri

Memorial Day 2012 – THE OTHER ONE PERCENT

Earlier this month I stood with a gathering of heroes under a cloudless Southern California sky. It was a typical Chamber of Commerce-type day in Oceanside, a few miles from the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton, just north of San Diego. The sun was creeping toward its noon peak and a cool ocean breeze made for a comfortable morning. More than sixty Marines in their dress blue uniforms stood in formation off to the side of a flag pole; the family seated to the front. As much as the Navy chaplain tried to call this a celebration of life, it was a memorial service for a fallen hero; far too many tears for a celebration. A thirty-year-old Marine staff sergeant, on his third combat deployment, died two weeks earlier in Afghanistan, the victim of the terrorist’s weapon of choice, the improvised explosive device, an IED. He left a wife, parents, friends, and fellow Marines.

Abdo convicted in Fort Hood bomb plot

Verdict came say day testimony wrapped up

WACO, Texas (AP) — A federal jury on Thursday convicted an AWOL Muslim soldier of attempting to blow up a Texas restaurant full of Fort Hood troops.

The Waco jury convicted Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo of the most serious charge, attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, which could land him in prison for life. Abdo also was convicted of attempted murder of U.S. officers or employees, and four counts of possessing a weapon in furtherance of a federal crime of violence.

In a recorded police interview, Abdo said he was planning to pull off an attack in the Fort Hood area “because I don’t appreciate what my unit did in Afghanistan.”

“Sacred Trust” focuses on Obama’s work for veterans, is narrated by Obama and begins with him talking to the camera. “The sacrifices that our troops have made have been incredible,” he says.

Interspersed with shots of Obama in an open-collared shirt are night-vision video of soldiers on a raid in a war zone, a daughter greeting her father who is wearing military fatigues, a wounded service member running on an outdoor track and Obama greeting veterans. News citations of improved veteran’s benefits flash on the screen.

At the end, Obama salutes.

“Sacred Trust” also is notable because it makes reference to the military operation that killed Osama bin Laden. (I’ve been busy visiting with my daughter and her family this past week ~ she heads back to Korea tomorrow for 4 more months.  I do believe this time will be harder than the first.  When she gets back from her tour there, they’ll be moving to a new base…somewhere.  Hopefully not Alaska.  As much as I’d love to see Alaska, it would be a helluva long drive, since I refuse to fly anymore.)

Judicial Watch Obtains DOD and CIA Records Detailing Meetings with bin Laden Raid Filmmakers

DOD Officials Disclosed to Filmmakers Identity of SEAL Team Six Operator and Commander; Ask Film Director to Withhold Operator’s Name, ‘because he shouldn’t be talking out of school.’

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch, the organization that investigates and fights government corruption, announced today that it has obtained records from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) regarding meetings and communications between government agencies and Kathryn Bigelow, Academy Award-winning director of The Hurt Locker, and screenwriter Mark Boal.  According to the records, the Obama Defense Department granted Bigelow and Boal access to a “planner, Operator and Commander of SEAL Team Six,” which was responsible for the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden, to assist Bigelow prepare her upcoming feature film.

Adding more fuel (good ol’ gasoline too ~ not that green bio-crap) to my fire is International Security Assistance Force commander, Marine Corps Gen. John R. Allen’s summer-in-Afghanistan assessment:

“I owe the president some real analysis on this. We’re going to need combat power; I don’t think anyone questions that,” Marine Corps Gen. John R. Allen, International Security Assistance Force commander, told reporters at the Pentagon.

Allen said significant events will occur in Afghanistan this summer, including the withdrawal of some troops, reposturing the battle space, inserting advisors, and moving Afghan forces increasingly into the lead.

“We’ve got about 30 months left on the campaign, 31 months or so,” the commander said. “The ANSF has yet to be fully recruited. It’ll be done soon, but the deadline on it was 1 October.”

And how many of the ANSF “recruits” will lethally turn on our Troops?

Where’s the Media??

Oh yeah.  Spending their time and resources on haircuts and 150 year old massacres.  If they do turn their focus to the military, it’s always about the dangers of all the PTSD-suffering ”walking timebombs” out there or the batsh*t crazy murderous troop that goes off the rails.

PTSD: Challenging, But Manageable

A movement has started to inform employers that the dangers and frequency of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are often overstated. According to researcher Dr. Harry Croft, medical director at the San Antonio Psychiatric Research Center, whose views on hiring veterans were covered in an earlier post “The Right Reason to Hire Veterans,” “Not only are the rates and severity of PTSD  lower than many assume but, when understood, the impact of PTSD in the workplace can be managed.”

PTSD Isn’t as Common as We Think

According to Dr. Croft, people assume that all service people coming back from Iraq or Afghanistan have PTSD. His own research shows that only one out of five returning veterans have some form of PTSD. What’s more, Dr. Croft states that the severity of PTSD is also exaggerated. While Staff Sergeant Bales, accused of murder in Afghanistan probably has PTSD, he also has a number of other maladies that contributed to the alleged crimes, according to Dr. Croft.

Michigan freshman Democratic Congressman Hansen Clarke represents the state’s 13th District and serves on the Homeland Security and Science, Space and Technology committees.

A former Chief of Staff to Michigan’s pro-Marxist Congressman John Conyers, Hansen Clarke seems to be following in his former mentor’s political footsteps.

Over many years, Congressman Clarke has openly aligned himself with the highly influential Detroit local of the US’ largest Marxist organization, Democratic Socialists of America.

Reaffirming a relationship that began several years ago, Congressman Clarke personally presented awards at Greater Detroit DSA’s 12th annual Frederick Douglass-Eugene V. Debs Dinner on October 1st at UAW Local 600 in Dearborn, Michigan.

Clarke presented Congressional citations to far leftist, the Reverend Ed Rowe and to the Restaurant Opportunities Center-Michigan.

Other speakers included an event regular, Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO President Saundra Williams and newly appointed DSA National Director Maria Svart.

What is CPC?

The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) consists of one United States Senator and seventy five members of the United States House of Representatives, and is the largest caucus within the House Democratic Caucus.  Established in 1991, the CPC reflects the diversity and strength of the American people and seeks to give voice to the needs and aspirations of all Americans and to build a more just and humane society.

» To uphold the right to universal access to affordable, high quality healthcare for all.

» To invest in America and create new jobs in the U.S. by building more affordable housing, re-building America’s schools and physical infrastructure, cleaning up our environment, and improving homeland security.

3. Promoting Global Peace and Security

» To honor and help our overburdened international public servants – both military and civilian.

» To bring U. S. troops home from Iraq as soon as possible.

» To re-build U.S. alliances around the world, restore international respect for American power and influence, and reaffirm our nation’s constructive engagement in the United Nations and other multilateral organizations.

» To enhance international cooperation to reduce the threats posed by nuclear proliferation and weapons of mass destruction.

» To increase efforts to combat hunger and the scourge of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other infectious diseases.

» To encourage debt relief for poor countries and support efforts to reach the UN’s Millennium Goals for Developing Countries.

4. Advancing Environmental Protection & Energy Independence » To free ourselves and our economy from dependence upon imported oil and shift to growing reliance upon renewable energy supplies and technologies, thus creating at least three million new jobs, cleansing our environment, and enhancing our nation’s security.

» To promote environmental justice in affirmation that all people have an inherent right to a healthy environment, clean air, and clean water wherever we live, work, and relax.

» To change incentives in federal tax, procurement, and appropriation policies to:

(A) Speed commercialization of solar, biomass, and wind power generation, while encouraging state and local policy innovation to link clean energy and job creation;

(B) Convert domestic assembly lines to manufacture highly efficient vehicles, enhance global competitiveness of U.S. auto industry, and expand consumer choice;

(C) Increase investment in construction of “green buildings” and more energy-efficient homes and workplaces;

(D) Link higher energy efficiency standards in appliances to consumer and manufacturing incentives that increase demand for new durable goods and increase investment in U.S. factories;

» To eliminate environmental threat posed by global warming and ensuring that America does our part to advance an effective global problem-solving approach.

» To expand energy-efficient transportation choices by increasing investment in synthesized networks, including bicycle, local bus and rail transit, regional high-speed rail and magnetic levitation rail projects.

» To preserve prudent public interest regulations that encourage sustainable growth and investment, ensure energy diversity and system reliability, protect workers and the environment, reward consumer conservation, and support an expanding marketplace that rewards the commercialization of energy-efficient technologies.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?  What they don’t post on their site is how they will attain all these lofty goals ~ or how they will pay for all of this. Basically, the bottom line is they will legislate more and more laws and regulations to control every aspect of your life, beating you down until the word “liberty” will be cast into the bin of archaic philosophies.

They will choose what food you eat, what area you can live in, what type of dwelling you’ll live in, where your kids will go to school, what they will learn there, what kind of car you can drive, if they don’t outlaw cars altogether, what you can discuss and where you can discuss it, who you can gather with and where, what healthcare you can receive and where, what kind of work you can do and how much you will be paid, and church?  Maybe.  Maybe not.

It has already begun and most people don’t even realize just how much of their goal has been attained.
