The Man Who Will Not Be Named’s (TMWWNBN) Weekly Address:

Remarks of President Barack Obama
As Prepared for Delivery
The White House
January 12, 2013

Hi, everybody.  This week, I welcomed President Hamid Karzai to the White House to discuss the way ahead in Afghanistan.  And today, I want to update you on how we will end this war, bring our troops home, and continue the work of rebuilding America.

Over the past four years, thanks to our brave men and women in uniform, we’ve dealt devastating blows to al Qaeda.  We’ve pushed the Taliban out of their strongholds.   And our core objective – the reason we went to war in the first place – is now within reach: ensuring that al Qaeda can never again use Afghanistan to launch attacks against America.

The 33,000 additional forces that I ordered to Afghanistan served with honor, completed their mission, and – as promised – returned home last fall.  This week, we agreed that this spring, Afghan forces will take the lead for security across the entire country, and our troops will shift to a support role.  In the coming months, I’ll announce the next phase of our drawdown.  And by the end of next year, America’s war in Afghanistan will be over.

This progress has only been possible because of the heroic sacrifices of our troops and diplomats, alongside forces from many other nations.  More than a half million Americans – military and civilian – have served in Afghanistan.  Thousands have been wounded.  More than 2,000 have given their lives.

This remains a very difficult mission.  The work ahead will not be easy.  Our forces are still in harm’s way.  But make no mistake – our path is clear, and we are moving forward.  Because after more than a decade of war, the nation we need to rebuild is our own.

As we do, we have to care for our troops and veterans who fought in our name. We have to grow our economy and shrink our deficits.  Create new jobs and boost family incomes.  We have to fix our infrastructure and our immigration system.  We have to protect our planet from the destructive effects of climate change – and protect our children from the horrors of gun violence.

These, too, will be difficult missions for America.  But they must be met.  And if we can summon just a fraction of the determination of our men and women in uniform, I know we can meet them.  And I intend to work as hard as I know how to make sure we do.

Thank you.

Sounds so good, yes?  (You can read the WH’s article on their meeting here.)

Notice he did not mention the possibility of an office set up in Qatar for the Taliban.  (Doesn’t sound much like a surrender to me.)

After having listened to the BS lies coming from TMWWNBN these past 4 years, nothing he says can be believed.

Except for the part where he said he will transform America.  Being the Socialist Progressive Constitution-Hating Worst President EVER, we can count on that.

Sadly, we can’t count on the state propaganda arm media to do any real digging for the facts.

Others are not so sure it’s all rainbows and unicorns:

National security analysts in Washington expressed skepticism that Afghan forces would be capable of ensuring stability in the country, saying they have garnered little trust among the local population and do not have the resources and training in ancillary aspects of combat, such as logistics and medical care.

“It’s one thing for an Afghan solder to be confident in security when he’s fighting alongside Americans and knows that should he be wounded, he’ll be medevaced out for treatment,” Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and a resident scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, told RIA Novosti.

“It’s another thing for that Afghan solder to be motivated to fight when he knows that if he is wounded in combat, he’ll be left there to die,” Rubin added.

Vanda Felbab-Brown, a counterinsurgency expert at the Brookings Institution, told RIA Novosti on Thursday that the announced accelerated handover to Afghan forces had been on the table recently and comes as no surprise.

But should coalition troop levels dip into the “low thousands,” effective training of their local counterparts will become “very difficult to deliver,” said Felbab-Brown, author of “Aspiration and Ambivalence: Strategies and Realities of Counterinsurgency and State-Building in Afghanistan.”

Retired US Gen. Stanley McChrystal told the New York Times in an interview this week that a radically reduced force size could also lose the local population’s support for US counterterrorism efforts there.

“If you don’t have the support of the Afghan people, there’s no reason for them to be supportive of this,” McChrystal, the former top US commander in Afghanistan, told the Times.

If achieving our goal in Afghanistan is to exit the country (victory never has come into the conversation) and make peace with the Taliban, why wait?  Send the diplomats and let ‘em talk, talk, talk.
